On 22nd April - the FBHVC's "Drive it!" Day - we had our first Open Day when Friends, members of the Rootes car clubs and the wider public could come and see the Archive Centre, find out what we are all about, and enjoy some special displays featuring recent acquisitions.
The Trustees on duty were kept busy from the word go, at 10am, right through to closing time at 5pm, with a total for the day of over 60 visitors. About £150 was raised for Trust funds, including over £50 in donations, and the kitchen was constantly on the go providing light refreshments. Also much in use showing Rootes rallying films was a widescreen television/ DVD player, recently donated to the Trust. The external appearance of the Archive Centre has been greatly enhanced by new signage in the six upper windows of the foyer, naming the Rootes marques - just as it used to be done in all the dealerships!
The range of cars at any one time also made for an excellent display with all the Rootes marques, and visitors in Peugeot, Jaguars, MGs and even an Allard! In mid-afternoon a convoy of Imps, Ginettas etc from the Imp Club's Swindon/SW regions arrived at the end of a "Drive it!" tour and had their own guided tour of our facilities. The archives on display included material from the late Colin Malkin, detailing his successful rallying/motorsport career, and also copies of some private Rootes family archives which Tim and Nick Rootes have generously made available to us to be copied, so they can be available for anyone to access at the Archive Centre.
More of this material will be on display at future Open Days - the next two are on Sunday 10 June and Sunday 14 October, from 10am to 5pm. We extend a warm invitation to everyone to come along and see the latest developments. So don't just read about the Archive Centre, come and see for yourself!
